PROJECT DETAILS

Moranbah WWTP Inlet Screen Repairs

Project Details

GE Maintenance Solutions (GEMS) worked with Isaac Regional Council (IRC) earlier this year to complete critical repairs at the Moranbah Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). The project involved removing the inlet screen, performing weld repairs on the screen basket, and fitting new screw brushes to restore reliable operation.

Planning and Preparation

Before starting site works, the GEMS team reviewed the inlet screen’s condition and planned a safe approach for its removal and repair. Together with IRC staff, they coordinated lifting, isolation, and confined space procedures to ensure a controlled work environment.

Key planning steps included:

  • Inspecting the inlet screen to identify priority weld repairs
  • Preparing a Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) for the mechanical tasks
  • Planning lifting operations to prevent structural stress during removal
  • Confirming materials and replacement brushes before mobilisation

These preparations allowed the crew to complete each step safely and efficiently.

The Repair Process

Once the screen was removed, the GEMS team repaired cracked and corroded welds on the basket and replaced the worn screw brushes. Each weld was tested for strength and alignment, ensuring the screen could return to service in peak condition.

After the repairs, the screen was reinstalled and checked for smooth mechanical movement and sealing. The system resumed operation with improved screening performance and reduced maintenance needs.

Project Outcome

The project finished safely and on schedule, with no incidents reported. The upgraded inlet screen now performs reliably, supporting Moranbah’s wastewater treatment operations and ensuring consistent service for the community.

Key Outcomes:

  • Completed weld repairs to specification
  • Installed new screw brushes for optimal screening
  • Achieved safe, on-time project delivery
  • Improved reliability for critical wastewater assets
