Project Details
GE Maintenance Solutions (GEMS) recently completed the Inverell STP Aerator Installation, assembling and installing six new aerators at the Inverell Sewage Treatment Plant in NSW to enhance efficiency and reliability.
As part of the overall upgrade program, the works form part of a major upgrade to improve the plant’s aeration and treatment efficiency. GEMS successfully completed the assembly and installation of three aerators into one of the plant’s treatment tanks, with the remaining units scheduled for installation later this year.
Planning the Approach
Prior to mobilisation, the GEMS team worked closely with the client to review the lifting strategy, access arrangements, and site safety requirements. Given the size and weight of each aerator, detailed lift studies were undertaken using both mobile cranes and telehandlers to ensure the Inverell STP Aerator Installation could be completed safely and without disruption to surrounding operations.
Key planning steps included:
- Conducting lift trials to confirm the reach, stability, and alignment for each aerator assembly.
- Preparing a detailed Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) and risk assessment for all mechanical lifting operations.
- Staging and pre-assembling components onsite to streamline installation.
- Coordinating with onsite personnel to maintain clear communication during lifts and commissioning activities.
This preparation allowed the GEMS team to safely execute each lift with precision, minimising downtime and maintaining site productivity.
The Installation Works
Each aerator required careful assembly, mechanical alignment, and controlled lowering into position. The works were completed using a crane-assisted lift and guide system, ensuring accurate placement and secure anchoring within the tank structure.
The installation process included:
- Mechanical assembly of each aerator unit and structural support frame.
- Rigging and lifting into the designated tank using a 20-tonne and 55-tonne crane setup.
- Alignment and securing of each aerator to its mounting point.
- Verification of electrical and mechanical clearances prior to commissioning.
The GEMS team’s experience in precision mechanical installation ensured the aerators were installed to specification and ready for integration with the plant’s aeration system.

Delivering the Inverell STP Aerator Installation
This stage of the project was completed safely and on schedule, with three aerators now operational in one of the treatment tanks.
Key outcomes included:
- Three aerators successfully assembled and installed.
- Safe and efficient crane operations with no incidents or delays.
- Strong collaboration between GEMS and the client’s site team.
- Works completed to specification and within the planned timeframe.
GEMS will return later in the year to complete installation of the remaining three aerators across the other tanks.
Why This Matters
Aeration is a critical process in wastewater treatment, ensuring optimal oxygen transfer and effective biological treatment. By delivering this project, GEMS has supported the ongoing performance, reliability, and efficiency of Inverell’s wastewater treatment operations.
