Karumba BOD Tank 1 Aeration Upgrade

Project Details

In August 2025, Sibanye Stillwater engaged GE Maintenance Solutions (GEMS) to deliver a major upgrade at the Karumba Wastewater Treatment Plant. The scope involved removing the existing aeration components and installing a new EDI-supplied aeration system inside BOD Tank 1.

The works were completed efficiently, with the new system installed and commissioned in just four days, ensuring the plant can continue treating wastewater reliably and effectively.

Planning the Approach

Before works began, GEMS carried out detailed site surveys and measurements to confirm the condition of the tank and prepare installation plans. This preparation allowed the team to mobilise quickly and coordinate equipment delivery, ensuring minimal downtime for the plant.

The Maintenance Works

The upgrade involved several critical steps:

  • Removal of existing aeration components that had reached the end of service life.
  • Installation of new piping layouts to suit the EDI aeration system design.
  • Fitting and alignment of aeration discs across the tank floor.
  • Testing and commissioning to confirm reliable performance.

Throughout the process, GEMS technicians worked safely and efficiently, delivering a complete system replacement with no unexpected delays.

Delivering Results

The project highlights GEMS’ ability to manage complex upgrades within short timeframes while maintaining a high standard of workmanship. Key outcomes for Sibanye Stillwater include:

  • A fully upgraded and modern aeration system.
  • Improved oxygen transfer and treatment efficiency.
  • Reduced long-term maintenance needs.
  • Reliable commissioning and operational handover within just four days.

Why This Matters

Aeration systems are at the heart of biological wastewater treatment. By upgrading the BOD Tank 1 system at Karumba, GEMS has helped ensure the plant continues to meet strict environmental and operational requirements.

This project demonstrates how proactive upgrades can extend asset life, reduce operating costs, and improve treatment performance — protecting both the environment and community health.

From careful planning to hands-on delivery, this project shows how GEMS provides more than maintenance — we deliver solutions that keep Queensland’s essential infrastructure moving.
